The Oral Presentation component of the Envirothon competition challenges teams to integrate knowledge from all five topic areas—Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and the Special Topic—into a cohesive solution. While the Special Topic serves as the foundation for the scenario, addressing key issues within its scope, the presentation also incorporates elements specific to each of the other topic areas. Teams must prepare thoroughly, not only by mastering the academic content but also by developing essential communication skills. This includes drafting a well-structured presentation, delivering it live before a panel of judges, and confidently defending their proposed management strategies during a Q&A session.
On Presentation Day, students are divided into their teams, and team captains randomly draw their presentation order (e.g., Room 1, Slot 2). Once rotations are assigned, students are separated from their coaches, internet access, and all study materials. Each team is given the written scenario and has the opportunity to ask questions of the station leads during the first hour, with responses shared with all teams.
Over the next six hours, teams work in isolation to prepare their presentations using provided laptops, which include access to pre-approved images, tables, and information to enhance their visuals. Teams then present their proposed solution in a 20-minute presentation to a panel of judges, followed by a Q&A session. Both the presentation and the team's responses to questions contribute to their score. The oral presentation is worth 200 points, making it twice as valuable as any individual station test.
